Games as a form of Literature?

Please bear with me as I think out loud for a moment:

1. I am engaging in a serious academic investigation of video games as a form of literature.

2. In order to do that, I will first need to address some basic, fundamental questions:

-What counts as literature?

-Is there enough of a correlation between video games and that definition to be able to say that 'video games are a form of literature'?

3. If video games cannot be considered literature, then do certain parts of video games have literary merit?

I am interested to hear any and all thoughts, blurbs and opinions, as I am thinking myself in circles trying to figure out how I am going to turn this into a Master's thesis.

Thanking you in advance, of course.
